Biography
Anjelah Johnson, an actress, comedian, and one-time NFL cheerleader, introduced a pair of memorable figures to MADtv audiences: the abrasive and ostentatiously ghetto-fabulous Bon Qui Qui, along with Tammy, a cagey employee at a nail salon. Johnson, who is of Mexican and Native American ancestry and grew up in San Jose, California, left college after receiving an unexpected invitation to become a member of the Oakland Raiders’ cheerleading unit, the Raiderettes, an opportunity that relocated her to Los Angeles. Exposure arrived once she began performing on the city’s standup stages and posted a clip featuring her Tammy persona on YouTube, prompting MADtv producers to take notice. Although her time as a cast member on the sketch series lasted only four episodes beginning in 2007, the two characters proved popular enough to secure her an ALMA (American Latino Media Arts) award nomination the following year. In 2009 she made a guest appearance on the series Ugly Betty and supplied a voice for the animated feature Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. The standup special That’s How We Do It! debuted on Comedy Central in 2010 and appeared the same year on the Warner Bros. label.
