Biography
Beginning in 1989, Russell Peters, a standup comedian of East Indian descent, started building a dedicated audience across his native Canada. He took to the club circuit with material rooted in the racism he encountered as a child and teenager. That sharp, polarizing material carried him from open-mic nights to comedy festivals throughout the country. International dates soon followed in the U.S., the U.K., and additional territories, yet it was online circulation that transformed him into a global name. A set taped for the Canadian program Comedy Now! ranked among the most-viewed clips on the CTV network’s site, while a low-fi recording of his New York City performance circulated widely on BitTorrent and other P2P platforms. Freed from Canadian-only constraints, Peters achieved broader impact in 2006 when Warner Bros. issued the Outsourced CD and DVD.
