Biography
Known for biting wit and ruthless delivery, standup comedian Daniel Tosh has built a career as a television host whose sardonic material ranks among the most cutting available. Though born in Germany, he was raised in Florida as the son of a preacher—an upbringing that surprises most who encounter his edgy, flippant style. In Miami he created and hosted the late-night series Tens, using the platform to interview and deride the many models who frequent the city’s South Beach neighborhood. After working the comedy-club circuit, a strong showing at Montreal’s Just for Laughs International Comedy Festival opened the door to wider success. Subsequent festival dates took him to New Zealand and Kilkenny, Ireland, while he averaged roughly one hundred college-campus shows each year. His first appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman came in 2001. The next year he hosted his initial standup special, Comedy Central Presents Daniel Tosh. In 2005 the cable network’s record label issued his debut release, the CD/DVD package True Stories I Made Up. Two years later Daniel Tosh: Completely Serious aired on Comedy Central, with a DVD following soon afterward. The landscape shifted sharply in 2009 when Comedy Central premiered the half-hour series Tosh.0, pairing the comedian’s caustic commentary with outrageous online video clips. The program became an immediate success. In 2011 the announcement of its renewal for a third season coincided with the broadcast of Happy Thoughts. That Comedy Central special reached both CD and DVD later the same year. The network commissioned an animated series from Tosh in 2012; the wilderness-camp comedy Brickleberry ran until 2015. Also in 2015 he launched the People Pleaser tour, which Comedy Central released in 2016.
