Hailing from Queens, New York, Anthony Raneri surfaced on the punk audience's radar in the early 2000s through his role as lead vocalist and guitarist for Bayside. The outfit adopted its name in tribute to the neighborhood where its members had grown up and came together in 2000, focusing on atmospheric, heartfelt pop-punk shaped by the Smoking Popes and Alkaline Trio. By 2012 the group had built a loyal following through relentless touring, five studio albums, and assorted EPs and splits. As one of Bayside's chief songwriters, Raneri kept generating material, though some pieces felt ill-suited to the band. He therefore began using stretches of downtime between recordings and shows—periods he otherwise found idle and restless—to perform occasional solo acoustic sets. Bayside nevertheless stayed his central focus. After a few years of these scattered appearances, he judged himself prepared to document several songs. In February 2011 Bayside delivered Killing Time on Wind-Up Records, its first album for the label after a long stretch with Victory, and spent the bulk of the ensuing months promoting it on the road. Only at year's end did Raneri secure studio time, traveling to Hurley's Studios in California where, with assistance from musical friends, he swiftly wrapped his debut EP, New Cathedrals. Choosing an independent path for his solo output, he issued the record himself in January 2012 on Gumshoe Records. He promoted the release through dates on the Where's the Band? tour alongside other pop-punk frontmen working solo, including Saves the Day's Chris Conley and the Get Up Kids' Matt Pryor.
