During the 1960s, Antônio Marcos emerged as a leading figure in the Jovem Guarda movement after securing his entry into the entertainment world through amateur talent competitions. In 1967 he became a member of the Golden Gate choir and took acting parts in several stage works written by Moraci do Val. His earliest appearance on record came as part of the group Os Iguais. Breakthrough success arrived with the single “Tenho um Amor Melhor Que o Seu,” composed by Roberto Carlos and Erasmo Carlos. That track cleared the way for his debut LP, Antônio Marcos (1969), which moved 300,000 copies. Further hits followed, among them “Oração de um Jovem Triste” (Alberto Luís), “O Homem de Nazaré” (C. Fontana), and “Como Vai Você,” a collaboration with Mário Marcos that Roberto Carlos later recorded to wide acclaim and that Hebe Camargo also performed in subsequent years. He starred in the feature Pais Quadrados... Filhos Avançados (1970) and appeared in additional films plus major stage productions including Hair (1970) and Arena Conta Zumbi (1969). He also cut material in Spanish and issued albums in foreign territories.
