Biography
Zé Ramalho emerged during the 1970s as one of Northeast Brazil’s foremost pop figures. Blending mainstream songcraft with the region’s folk traditions placed him at the vanguard of the current Brazilian pop landscape. Working as composer, lyricist, and performer, he has seen his broad appeal borne out across a body of work that has so far yielded seventeen solo albums.
Rock and roll shaped his outlook deeply in adolescence. At twenty he redirected his focus toward Northeastern music, aiming to merge pop structures with folk elements. His debut release, credited to Zé Ramalho da Paraíba and issued by Solar in 1975, was made with Lula Cortes and included guest appearances by Alceu Valença and Geraldo Azevedo.
He relocated to Rio in 1977, the same year Vanusa scored a success with his song “Avohai.” In 1979 Amelinha, then his wife, scored a hit with his composition “Frevo Mulher.” That year also brought his first solo album, the Epic LP Zé Ramalho, which contained the popular tracks “Avohai” and “Vila Do Sossego.”
Peleja do Diabo Com o Dono do Céu featured the hit “Admirável Gado Novo,” whose social themes, together with his mystical leanings, have remained central to his output. In 1996 the same song appeared on the soundtrack to the telenovela Rei Do Gado. Later that year he joined his cousin Elba Ramalho, Alceu Valença, and Geraldo Azevedo for the Grande Encontro project, which produced a series of concerts and two CDs.
Nação Nordestina, released in 2000, paid tribute to celebrated Northeastern figures; its cover art drew inspiration from the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
