Biography
Originally from Wiltshire, the members of Archie Bronson Outfit—singer/guitarist Sam Windett, bassist Dorian Hobday, and drummer Mark Cleveland—only attracted notice after settling in southwest London. While attending art school there alongside future members of the Duke Spirit and the Beatings, the trio caught the ear of Domino Records’ president one evening at his regular haunt, the Cat’s Back. They secured a deal with the label in August 2003, and their favorably received debut, Fur, arrived the next summer. Further live work followed, among them several U.K. opening slots for the Black Keys in autumn 2004. March 2006 brought the follow-up, Derdang Derdang, helmed by Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings of Leon) and tracked in Nashville, Tennessee; the album reached American listeners that July, the same year the group earned a nomination for Best New Act on the MOJO Honours List. A break began in 2007, during which Cleveland and Windett launched the psychedelic side project the Pyramids. Nearly four years after Derdang Derdang, the band resurfaced in March 2010 with Coconut, their third album. Assisted by former DFA member Tim Goldsworthy, the set shifted from earlier grit toward a polished modern dance-punk aesthetic. Following its release the outfit paused again; Hobday departed, and Windett concentrated on his visual-art practice. Upon reconvening they brought in Capitol K for keyboards and production duties, tracked material across 2013, and released their fourth album, Wild Crush, in 2014.
