Ativin

Ativin came together in Bloomington, Indiana, during the winter of 1994 once guitarists Chris Carothers and drummer Rory Leitch connected at Indiana University. The following spring brought guitarist Dan Burton into the lineup, locking in their forceful instrumental rock approach. Steve Albini and Carl Saff handled recording duties for the debut EP Pills vs. Planes, issued in December 1996. Spring 1997 brought the single Modern Gang Reader/Larkin, marking the start of multiple releases on Secretly Canadian Records. Working with Andy Bryant at King Size, the band completed German Water—their first album for Secretly Canadian—which surfaced in March 1998. Returning to Albini’s Chicago studio Electrical Audio produced the four-song EP Summing the Approach, released in fall 1998. After a three-year gap, Interiors appeared in early 2002. Staying aligned with that record’s direction, Ativin issued Night Mute in early 2004.
