Martin Iveson initiated the Atjazz project during 1996 by issuing the Story EP on his independently run Mantis Recordings imprint while holding a daytime role composing music for the Tomb Raider games. The venture fused house and jazz elements inside dance-propelled downtempo frameworks, delivering the uncommon sensation of hearing relaxed sounds positioned front and center. A subsequent shift to DIY Discs yielded multiple singles that reached broader audiences and peaked in recognition with the 1998 appearance of his debut LP That Something together with a remix of Bob Sinclair's "Ghetto," a contribution many regarded as the undertaking that secured Iveson his greatest visibility. Building on the momentum of That Something, he returned to Mantis Recordings and delivered Labfunk in 2001. That album introduced markedly stronger jazz components through an intentional pivot toward live arrangements in place of studio-based production methods.
