Biography
Newcastle's Atomkraft predated their local competitors Venom in formation, having come together as early as 1979, though they never matched the notorious reputation of those black metal trailblazers. Emerging among the initial wave of New Wave of British Heavy Metal acts hailing from England's northeast, the group experienced multiple personnel shifts until stabilizing with Tony Dolan handling bass and vocals, Rob Matthews on guitar, and Ged Wolfe, previously of Tyson Dog, on drums. Following a series of demo recordings, this lineup secured a deal with Neat Records and released their first album, Future Warriors, during 1985. Exemplifying the frenetic speed metal style typical of British bands at that time, the record gained traction in the metal underground, which led to Atomkraft supporting Slayer at the latter's inaugural British performance held at London's Marquee Club. For the 1986 Queen of Death EP, Tony Dolan was temporarily replaced by vocalist Ian Swift and bassist D.C. Rage, yet he returned to his bass role after the latter's exit ahead of the 1987 album Conductors of Noise. That shorter release indicated a depletion of creative momentum for the band, prompting their eventual disbandment. In a twist of fate, Dolan joined a revived Venom lineup in 1989, and he later pursued acting while overseeing a short-lived Atomkraft reunion in the early 2000s.
