Auburn Lull shares origins with fellow Michigan acts Windy & Carl and Asha Vida through their creation of expansive space-rock and atmospheric textures influenced by Brian Eno. Although the once-active regional space-rock community diminished around the start of the new millennium, the group sustained and refined its vivid sonic approach, drawing sustained praise and expanding audiences. The Lansing, Michigan quartet formed in 1994, comprising Jason Kolb on guitars, Eli Wekenmen on guitars, Sean Heenan on guitars and vocals, and Jason Weisinger on drums. Ties soon developed with kindred Southeast Michigan ensembles, most notably Mahogany, resulting in the joint release of The Dual Group EP in 1997. Kolb contributed guitar at Mahogany performances, and Andrew Prinz of that band oversaw production of Auburn Lull’s first album, Alone I Admire, issued in 1999. Darla Distribution handled that debut along with the subsequent full-lengths Cast from the Platform in 2004 and Begin Civil Twilight in 2007, plus the 2005 collection Regions Less Parallel: Early Works & Rarities 1996-2004. After a period of inactivity, the project resurfaced in 2014 via the five-song cassette Hiber, released on Geographic North. The 2017 album Hypha, issued on Azure Vista, extended the ensemble’s measured and densely layered aesthetic while incorporating Ron Gibbs as a fifth member alongside the original lineup.
