Biography
Joel Shanahan, the Portland, Oregon electronic musician known also as Golden Donna and Purpura, channels his atmospheric house work through the Auscultation alias. The 2020 full-length III exemplifies this approach through its intricate rhythmic constructions, fluid textural motion, and buoyant melodic lines.
Shanahan first operated out of Madison, Wisconsin, where he launched the Golden Donna project in the early 2010s while running the boutique label Signal Dreams. Not Not Fun issued the Golden Donna album in November 2012, presenting luminous, arpeggio-centric electro environments. Golden Donna kept issuing cassettes and 12" EPs via outlets such as CGI Records and Not Not Fun’s affiliated 100% Silk imprint, yet Shanahan simultaneously explored deeper house directions under the Auscultation name. The project’s self-titled cassette surfaced on 1080p in 2014, and the more expansive L’étreinte Imaginaire followed on 100% Silk the next year. A series of limited editions and compilation tracks led to Auscultation’s debut vinyl LP, III, which 100% Silk released in 2020.
