Biography
Drawing from the industrial pulse of Kraftwerk alongside Public Image Ltd. and the deep-rooted heritage of their native Leeds, the unpolished post-punk five-piece Autobahn comprises vocalist Craig Johnson, guitarists Michael Pedel and Gavin Cobb, bassist Daniel Sleight, and drummer Liam Hilton. The outfit came together in February 2013 and commenced songwriting inside a rehearsal space at a D.I.Y. venue in Leeds. Following several months of live performances, they issued their first EP, Autobahn 1, that November. A second EP, Autobahn 2, appeared in July 2014, its Motorik rhythms highlighted by producer Matt Peel. The band returned to Peel for the 2015 full-length debut Dissemble, an effort shaped by Martin Hannett’s relentless inventive approach and captured inside a disused church. On 2017’s The Moral Crossing they constructed a personal studio within Leeds’ red-light district, handling production themselves to yield a collection of tracks marked by greater melancholy and electronic textures.
