Initially modest in approach, the Banda de Pau e Corda gained recognition for its skillful execution of material drawn from folklore research. After relocating to São Paulo during 1973, the group produced the album Vivência for RGE. The show sharing that title reached audiences in Recife, throughout the Northeastern state capitals, and at Teatro Municipal in Santo André, São Paulo. During 1975 the ensemble cut its follow-up release, Redenção on RCA, mounted the production of the same name, and additionally staged Alegoria, whose texts came from established Northeastern poets and writers. These presentations appeared in Recife, Fortaleza, and at universities across Rio de Janeiro. Nine further LPs and CDs appeared by 1992, together with two compilation releases. Of the lineup, only the brothers Roberto Andrade, Sérgio Andrade, and Waltinho Andrade stayed on as core members, while remaining personnel were engaged season by season.
