Biography
Basic Channel stands as the defining force behind a strain of ultra-minimal techno reduced to its barest mechanical elements. Founded in 1993 as both an artist project and a label by the Berlin-based duo of Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald (aka Maurizio), the operation has methodically assembled a compact yet revered body of work issued under the guises Cyrus, Phylyps, q1.1, Quadrant, Octagon, and Radiance. The guiding principle remains a rigorous exploration of nearly textureless machine music, where that single qualifying adverb proves essential to the approach’s impact. In common with fellow German techno outfits and imprints such as Tresor, Studio 1, and Mike Ink, Basic Channel maintains deep respect for the earliest Chicago acid and house records alongside the initial wave of Detroit techno; the latter influence surfaces most clearly in the pair’s strict minimalism regarding rhythm and structure. Since their start they have issued roughly a dozen 12-inch singles, several of them approaching album duration, while remaining committed vinyl enthusiasts who even established their own pressing plant. Their debut compact disc arrived in 1996 under the plain title Basic Channel, presenting a continuous mix drawn from those earlier vinyl sides, which have continued to appear at a measured pace of just a few each year. The project belongs to an extended circle of affiliated artists and labels that encompasses Thomas Koner/Porter Ricks, the Chain Reaction imprint devoted to more avant-experimental techno, Moritz’s solo outlet M that houses his Maurizio releases, the Main Street label focused on pop house, and the CD-exclusive experimental concern Imbalance.
