Biography
Maurizio functions as the performing alias of Moritz Von Oswald, the Berlin-based musician and entrepreneur holding a half-share in Basic Channel Records. He co-produced the label’s influential series of fuzzy EPs, which deliberately embraced low production values and appeared under the aliases Cyrus, Quadrant, Phylyps, and Radiance. Von Oswald reserved his solo output for the Basic Channel sublabel M, which issued roughly six Maurizio EPs throughout the mid-1990s. Although the Maurizio aesthetic closely parallels that of Basic Channel, Von Oswald frequently emphasized pounding dub basslines and a comparatively clean production approach, rendering the material more viable on dancefloors.
Originally a percussionist from the Berlin area, Von Oswald contributed to late-1980s albums by the Associates and Holger Hiller while performing in one of Palais Schaumburg’s final lineups. By decade’s end he had shifted from drumming to production, partnering with fellow Palais Schaumburg member Thomas Fehlmann in 3MB, the in-house production team at Berlin’s Tresor Records. During his Tresor tenure he collaborated with Detroit techno originator Juan Atkins, reshaping one of Atkins’s Infiniti tracks, “Think Quick,” into a landmark techno recording. The Berlin-Detroit partnership underscored the enduring ties between the two cities; in 1995 Von Oswald again joined Atkins for the debut Model 500 album, Sonic Sunset.
Still employed at Tresor in 1993, Von Oswald launched Basic Channel Records alongside partner Mark Ernestus. The label’s signature sound—a gritty reinterpretation of Detroit techno featuring minimal variation and extensive echo-laden resonance—emerged across nine vinyl-only EPs credited to the same aliases, though all were understood to stem from Von Oswald and Ernestus. Concurrently the Maurizio project commenced in 1993 with the Ploy EP on M Records. Following a remix by the Orb, the track was reissued by WAU!/Mr. Modo and included on the second Excursions in Ambience compilation. M Records subsequently released an EP by Vainqueur before returning to Maurizio for five additional EPs over the ensuing three years.
Beyond M and Basic Channel, Von Oswald established the sublabels Rhythm & Sound, Burial Mix, and Imbalance, later relinquishing day-to-day oversight of the last to Robert Henke of Monolake. With the exception of Maurizio’s “Ploy,” none of the Basic Channel or Maurizio catalog appeared on cassette or CD, reflecting the duo’s firm commitment to vinyl. In 1995 a Basic Channel sampler finally surfaced, though most selections were heavily edited to accommodate more than three or four tracks on a single 70-minute disc. A comparable Maurizio compilation followed in 1997, succeeded by collections from Basic Channel associates Porter Ricks, Vainqueur, and Monolake.
