Biography
Nestled in Salford within Greater Manchester, the BBC Philharmonic ranks among the United Kingdom’s foremost ensembles, setting itself apart through widespread public presence and a steadfast dedication to new British composition, a focus reflected in its creation of a composer-conductor post. Performances take place primarily at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, a venue that anchors the orchestra’s regional identity. Listeners across northern England take particular pride in this radio ensemble, whose independent character has flourished despite London’s dominance in cultural and financial affairs. Far from merely enduring, the group has carved out a profile unlike that of the BBC Symphony Orchestra: broader in popular appeal yet bolder in exploration, and notably enterprising through an extensive discography, community initiatives, and global touring.
Its past includes repeated upheavals. Before the BBC’s formal founding, Manchester’s 2YZ station operated from the Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Company premises in 1922; a modest ensemble was soon formed for on-air work, initially favoring lighter fare while occasionally enlarging for symphonic and operatic presentations. The station earned notice for championing British scores, among them the first broadcasts of pieces by Edward Elgar, Gustav Holst, and William Walton. Following the BBC’s establishment in 1927, the ensemble became the Northern Wireless Orchestra and later the BBC Northern Orchestra. Though its continuation remained uncertain, both its personnel and its programming steadily expanded. Wartime performances in communities throughout the region broadened its audience, and the orchestra strengthened its standing for interpreting and airing British music, often with living composers on the podium.
A milestone arrived in 1961 when the BBC Northern Orchestra debuted at the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts led by George Hurst, marking the shift from regional to national and international stature. After a prolonged strike in 1980, the BBC pledged resources for a full-strength Manchester ensemble, which received its present name in 1982 under principal conductor Edward Downes. Yan Pascal Tortelier assumed the role in 1991. The commitment to daring repertoire soon extended worldwide, drawing conductors and composers from many nations.
That same year the composer-conductor position was inaugurated with Peter Maxwell Davies as its inaugural holder; he contributed numerous scores, among them a cycle of symphonies that concluded with Symphony No. 7, unveiled in 2000, and he documented several orchestral works on disc. James MacMillan succeeded him in 2001. Gianandrea Noseda was appointed principal conductor in 2002 (the title changed to chief conductor in 2006). HK Gruber took over the composer-conductor duties in 2009. Noseda became conductor laureate in 2011, when Juanjo Mena stepped in as chief conductor. In 2015 the post was retitled composer in association and awarded to Mark Simpson. Mena’s tenure ended in 2018; Omer Meir Wellber, after notable guest appearances, became chief conductor the following year. John Storgårds, who had served as chief guest conductor since 2017, was named chief conductor in 2023.
Hundreds of recordings document the orchestra’s activity, the majority issued by Chandos and others appearing on Naxos and Albany. In 2023, under Rumon Gamba, the ensemble released a Chandos album of Malcolm Arnold’s orchestral music featuring clarinetist Michael Collins.
