Biography
Scotland maintains the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as its national broadcasting ensemble and one of Europe's foremost orchestras. Among the five full-time BBC orchestras, it stands as Scotland's oldest full-time radio orchestra. Studio broadcasts for the BBC account for most of its work, yet the ensemble has earned acclaim through concerts throughout the United Kingdom and abroad.
Conductor and composer Ian Whyte created the ensemble, then known as the BBC Scottish Orchestra, in 1935 while serving as the BBC's inaugural head of music in Scotland. Initially based in Edinburgh, the orchestra relocated in 1938 to its new purpose-built home in Glasgow. Live studio broadcasts for the BBC Home and World Services continued without interruption through World War II. After the war Whyte enlarged the ensemble, initiating in 1948 its annual appearances at the Edinburgh Festival, although studio work still formed the greater part of its schedule.
Norman Del Mar was appointed principal conductor in 1960. In 1961 he directed the BBC Scottish Orchestra and the Scottish National Orchestra in the United Kingdom premiere of Stockhausen's Gruppen für drei orchester. The orchestra gave its first performance at the BBC Proms the next year under his direction. Further expansion took place during Del Mar's tenure, resulting in the 1963 renaming as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. After his departure in 1965 the BBC SSO was led by principal conductors including James Loughran from 1965 to 1971, Christopher Seaman from 1971 to 1977, and Jerzy Maksymiuk from 1983 to 1993. Ilan Volkov became chief conductor in 2003, the youngest person to hold that post with any BBC orchestra, and oversaw the move to City Halls in Glasgow as the new residence; he remained in the role until 2009. Thomas Dausgaard was appointed chief conductor in 2016 under a contract extending through 2022.
Public engagements grew during the 1990s while BBC broadcasts continued, producing tours across Europe, the Americas, India, and China as well as increased participation in festivals such as the Cheltenham Festival and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
In addition to its broadcast work the BBC SSO has issued numerous commercial recordings, the majority appearing on the Hyperion label. A 2019 Hyperion release presented the orchestra under Dausgaard performing Sibelius' Kullervo.
