Beat Crusaders, often shortened to BECR, pursue an eccentric take on mainstream rock by blending synth pop with punk energy while maintaining a postmodern promotional style that hides their faces behind dot-matrix printouts of their own portraits. Their roots trace to 1997, when the group launched as an experimental indie pop outfit, though subsequent shifts toward pop accessibility shaped their trajectory. The 1999 debut single E.C.D.T. and EP Howling Symphony Of... performed well on Japan's independent charts and earned favorable critical notice, establishing a platform that required several additional years to elevate. During that period the band issued three full-length albums beginning with All You Can Eat in 2000, issued various split CDs, and completed tours of the U.S. West Coast and Australia between 2000 and 2002. Creative differences prompted a 2003 breakup, after which most members formed Anita Chili Peppers; the departure occurred without public controversy. Toru Hidaka, the only remaining original member, rebuilt the lineup into a quintet. The reconfiguration proved pivotal: in 2004 the band supplied the theme for the anime series Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad, securing a deal with a Sony Music subsidiary. Between 2005 and 2008 they issued three well-received studio albums plus the Western pop and rock covers collection Musicrusaders, leading to frequent commissions for animated projects. Their contributions appeared in the Bleach and Juushin Enbu series, while the track "Hey Hey Look Look" featured on Nickelodeon's Kappa Mikey.
