Imposing rapper Big Tone has championed the funk-driven regional approach known among Bay Area artists as mob music, a sound that shifts between laid-back grooves and hard-edged confrontation across projects ranging from Merceless (2004) to the Sav It Out series (2007-2014) and Game Gifted (2018).

An Antioch native, he debuted both his recording career and the Sav It Out label in 2004 via Merceless, a release that crystallized his own durable variation on the local idiom and included contributions from Woodie, the Jacka, and Husulah. In 2007 he introduced the ongoing Sav It Out compilation series, coinciding with the tragic death of his revered mentor Woodie; the loss has continued to spur his output, prompting further installments in the compilation series alongside solo albums such as 2013’s Mind of a Hustla, Heart of a G’ and the 2018 efforts Stuck in My Wayz and Game Gifted. Tracks by Tone have drawn appearances from nearly every prominent Bay Area artist, among them Too Short, B-Legit, E-40, and Mac Mall.
