Biography
England's Bill Ryder-Jones has built a decades-spanning career as a producer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and singer/songwriter, issuing several well-received solo albums along the way. He joined psychedelic pop band the Coral as lead guitarist in 1996 while still in his early teens, remaining with the group for twelve years until moving on to independent work that included film scores for Bed in 2011 and Piggy in 2012 as well as more song-focused releases such as the ambitious If... in 2011 and the widely praised West Kirby County Primary in 2016. Outside his own projects he has also served as producer and session player for the Wytches, Michael Head, and Arctic Monkeys. His fifth solo album, Iechyd Da, appeared in 2024.
After leaving the Coral in 2008, the Merseyside musician began capturing songs and instrumental sketches at home. Drawing from Ennio Morricone, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, and the late Nick Drake's pastoral English folk style, he scored the 2009 short film Leave Taking for his longtime friend Laurence Easeman; those pieces formed the core of his debut EP, A Leave Taking Soundtrack. Additional soundtrack work followed for It’s Natural to Be Afraid in 2010, Bed in 2011, and Piggy in 2012. In November 2011 he issued his first Domino full-length, If..., inspired by Italo Calvino's 1979 novel If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler. The more intimate, song-driven A Bad Wind Blows in My Heart arrived in 2013. In subsequent years he concentrated on producing for Hooton Tennis Club, the Wytches, and Saint Saviour while also touring with Arctic Monkeys.
Shifting from the spare folk approach of his prior record, Ryder-Jones pursued a denser, ensemble-driven sound on the next album. Composed in his childhood bedroom at his mother's house and tracked in Liverpool, 2016's West Kirby County Primary examined deeply personal themes. With 2018's Yawn he turned inward once more, crafting a subdued, guitar-centered indie-rock set centered on ordinary daily experiences. The following year he revisited those same songs in a stripped-down acoustic-piano format on Yawny Yawn.
In the period after, he balanced production duties for Michael Head, Saint Saviour, and Brooke Bentham with work on his own fifth solo album. Released in 2024, the elaborately produced Iechyd Da—whose Welsh title means “good health”—blended lush, string-laden ballads with jangling folk-rock and pop elements, drawing together threads from across his earlier output.
