The formation of numerous bands has frequently stemmed from an impromptu invitation to serve as openers, prompting the quick assembly of a supporting ensemble. Such circumstances led to the creation of Boyskout in San Francisco when two experienced local musicians, singer and guitarist Leslie Satterfield along with drummer Caroline Mills, secured a slot supporting The Need at a Bay Area concert in 2001. What began as a practical necessity soon evolved into a complete quartet once keyboardist and singer China Lajczock and bassist Hannah Reiff joined the lineup. Satterfield further shaped the group’s aesthetic through her parallel work as an independent filmmaker. The resulting unit cultivated a following for its taut, shadowy new-wave intensity, echoing the style of hometown predecessors Romeo Void as well as the broader influences of Bauhaus and Nina Hagen. Following the release of their debut single “Secrets” in 2003, the band aligned with Alive Records, placing tracks on the label’s The Sound of San Francisco collection before issuing the full-length album School of Etiquette in 2004.
