In 1994 guitarist/vocalist Mark Dwinell and drummer Joe LaBrecque launched the Boston space-pop improv combo Bright as a duo. A rehearsal-jam cassette proved so compelling to Ba-Da-Bing founder Ben Goldberg that he immediately signed the band, leading to the 1996 release of its self-titled debut; the identical four-track tapes also supplied the material for the follow-up, 1997’s The Albatross Guest House. Bright grew to a quartet for 1998’s Blue Christian, an installment in Darla Records’ “Bliss Out” series, by adding guitarist Paul LaBrecque and bassist Jay Dubois. Fall 2000 brought the arrival of Full Negative or Breaks.
