Biography
Before launching her own solo work, Brody Dalle supplied the signature raspy vocals for both the Distillers and Spinnerette. Raised in Melbourne, Australia, she discovered punk rock and grunge during adolescence and first picked up guitar at age thirteen. While still a teenager she started Sourpuss, then relocated to Los Angeles after meeting Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, whom she married in 1997. The next year she assembled the Distillers, whose gritty punk sound drew parallels to Courtney Love and PJ Harvey on the band’s self-titled 2000 debut. Lineup shifts notwithstanding, two further albums followed. Originally issued in 2000, Sing Sing Death House was re-released in 2002 after the unexpected success of the single “Seneca Falls.” In 2003 the group delivered its major-label effort Coral Fang, on which Dalle reverted to her maiden name following her divorce from Armstrong.
Once the Distillers dissolved in 2006, Dalle launched Spinnerette alongside Alain Johannes of Eleven and Queens of the Stone Age; that same year’s QOTSA frontman Josh Homme became her second husband in 2007. Spinnerette’s Ghetto Love EP surfaced in 2008, and the full-length Spinnerette arrived in mid-2009, featuring former Distillers guitarist Tony Bevilacqua, ex-Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore, and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons. Dalle paused to raise her children Camille and Orrin before revealing plans for a solo album in late 2012. Diploid Love, issued in April 2014, incorporated contributions from Johannes, fellow Queens of the Stone Age member Michael Shuman, Shirley Manson, the Strokes’ Nick Valensi, and Warpaint’s Emily Kokal, revealing a broader and more layered dimension of her music.
