Biography
Oklahoma outfit BRONCHO originated as a ragged and intermittently playful pop punk unit anchored by frontman Ryan Lindsey's eccentric lyrics and singular vocal manner. Those vocal and lyrical qualities stayed constant even as the group's sonic approach transformed swiftly, moving from buoyant pop exemplified by the 2013 single "It's On" to hazy, downbeat ballads that defined much of Just Enough Hip to Be Woman in 2014 and then to wistful tracks shaped by new wave influences on the 2016 album Double Vanity. With the arrival of Bad Behavior in 2018, BRONCHO fused those contrasting threads into a tighter, more direct indie aesthetic whose material readily lent itself to reworkings by peers including Generationals and of Montreal on the 2020 remix EP Bad.
The band came together in 2010 in Norman, Oklahoma when guitarist and vocalist Lindsey joined forces with guitarist Ben King, bassist Jonathan Ford, and drummer Nathan Price. What began as informal recording sessions soon expanded after Lindsey circulated rough sketches among acquaintances for feedback, prompting the casual tracks to evolve into a committed group project once Ford scheduled an unannounced debut performance. Drawing from foundational punk groups such as the Ramones and the Stooges while incorporating the raw edge of '80s college rock, BRONCHO took shape.
Their debut full-length, Can't Get Past the Lips, appeared in 2011, earning national press, extensive touring, and placement among NPR's standout albums of that year. Fairfax Recordings, the imprint run by producer Kevin Augunas, reissued the album in 2013, after which the band began work on a follow-up before parting ways with both the label and Augunas. A 2011 single, "Try Me Out Sometime," surfaced via Park the Van, followed in 2013 by the CQ Records release "It's On," whose infectious hook featured prominently in the closing sequence of the third season of Girls.
Shifting to Dine Alone Records and operating as the trio of Lindsey, King, and Price, BRONCHO delivered their second album, Just Enough Hip to Be Woman, in fall 2014. Bassist Penny Pitchlynn and guitarist Mandii Larsen from the Low Litas augmented the live lineup for the ensuing tour, with Pitchlynn remaining for subsequent recordings. The new wave-tinged Double Vanity arrived in June 2016.
Extensive road work occupied the next several years, including support slots for Queens of the Stone Age and Cage the Elephant alongside headline dates. During this period the group tracked its fourth album, Bad Behavior, which Park the Van issued in October 2018 and which reflected observations on global events and everyday misconduct. Remixes by Computer Magic, Yeasayer, of Montreal, Generationals, and Methyl Ethel were compiled on the 2020 EP Bad. That same year BRONCHO issued the new single "Friends," while 2021 brought the jangly, slightly twee "It's Complicated" with its airy vocals. Additional visibility arrived through placements in Cartoon Network campaigns, the 2015 film Vacation, and series including Santa Clarita Diet and Reservation Dogs.
