Bruce Liu, the pianist, rose to immediate prominence following his triumph at the XVIII International Chopin Piano Competition held in 2021. This achievement prompted Deutsche Grammophon to sign him, leading to the label putting out recordings from his competition performances. His concert history encompasses engagements with prestigious orchestras across the globe in addition to Canadian ensembles. Among his discography stands WAVES: Music by Satie from 2024, featuring interpretations of Satie's compositions rendered both on an upright piano and a standard concert grand.

Born on May 8, 1997, in Paris, France, to parents of Chinese origin, Bruce Xiaoyu Liu (刘晓禹) relocated with his family to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, at the age of six. Piano lessons commenced two years thereafter. Competition entries began at age eleven, yielding victories in events such as the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal Standard Life Competition in 2012, the Prix d'Europe in 2015, and the Viseu International Piano Competition in Portugal during 2019. His training included studies under Richard Raymond in the piano program at the Montreal Conservatory of Music, followed by enrollment at the Université de Montréal, where instruction came from Dong Thai Son—the first Asian recipient of the Chopin International Competition title back in 1980. This mentorship extended into the early years of the 2020s.

Prior to securing the Chopin Prize, Liu had already collaborated with leading orchestras like the Cleveland Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra, alongside various Canadian ensembles, while also producing broadcast recordings for the ICI Radio-Canada network. A U.S. tour took place with the China National Center for the Performing Arts Orchestra. The competition victory ushered in what Liu described as a marathon of additional engagements, coupled with a Deutsche Grammophon agreement that saw the release of his winning performances in 2021, with more recordings from other competition stages following suit. The year 2023 brought forth the album WAVES: Rameau, Ravel, Alkan, succeeded in 2024 by WAVES: Music by Satie issued on Deutsche Grammophon. Noted for his charisma paired with a modest demeanor—often expressed through his remark that he is "not so good at piano"—Liu indulges in auto racing as a pastime, an interest shared by the pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, whom he respects and to whom his artistic approach bears certain similarities.
