Biography
As Italian composer and multi-instrumentalist Bruno Bavota gained wider acclaim, his sound evolved toward greater boldness and experimentation, yet the direct emotional core that defined his earliest work remained intact. His initial recordings, beginning with the crystalline neo-romantic piano and cello works of Il Pozzo d'Amor (2010), gave way to later releases such as Out of the Blue (2016) and Get Lost (2019), which introduced broader instrumentation and atmospheric production values that treated sonic space as equal to melody. The 2021 double album For Apartments: Songs & Loops alternated between unaccompanied piano miniatures and forward-looking synthesizer experiments.
Bavota, born in 1984, first played acoustic guitar before shifting his focus to piano. His independently issued debut, Il Pozzo d'Amor (2010), presented direct and affecting piano pieces augmented by cello from Fabrizia Nicolosi. La Casa Sulla Luna, issued in 2013 on the Italian label Lizard, added cellist Marco Pescosolido and violinist Paolo Sasso, while The Secret of the Sea, also released that year by Psychonavigation, incorporated guitar-based pieces and a more open production approach. Mediterraneo, which appeared in 2015 on the Moscow imprint Dronarivm, extended the maritime motif introduced on the prior record.
With the arrival of the more atmospheric Out of the Blue in 2016, Bavota’s compositions reached larger audiences via commercials, film and television placements, and prominent streaming playlists. That same year 1631 Recordings issued the digital overview Selected Works, followed in 2017 by the vinyl-only set Impression on Afrakà. After signing with Temporary Residence, he released RE_CORDIS in early 2019; captured in a single afternoon at a friend’s studio, the album featured one-take renditions of earlier pieces (plus one new composition) shaped by effects pedals and processors. Get Lost arrived later that year, extending those same methods within a conventional studio setting.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Bavota developed numerous sketches at home, capturing expansive synthesizer and outboard-processor pieces he called “Apartment Loops” alongside more private piano works labeled “Apartment Songs.” Several EPs documented the process before the full double album For Apartments: Songs & Loops appeared in 2021.
