Bryn Christopher earned the description of the male Amy Winehouse through a sound that merges classic soul with contemporary R&B, shaped by the influence of Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder. He entered the world in 1985 in Great Barr, Birmingham, and took to the stage while still young. At secondary school he joined a youth theater company, assembled a soul band, and created his earliest compositions as part of the Music GCSE curriculum. Two years at a well-known London stage school followed, after which a management team spotted his potential and arranged an introduction to Polydor’s Colin Barlow. The next twelve months were spent in the studio with Australian co-writer and producer Jarrad Rogers and the production outfit Midi Mafia, whose credits include Jennifer Lopez, securing permission to sample material from the celebrated Stax/East Memphis catalog. A sold-out residency at London’s Soho Revue Bar and opening slots on tours with Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Mary J. Blige paved the way for his signing to America’s leading live booking agency, William Morris. His debut single, “The Quest,” drew inspiration from his brother’s deployment as a soldier in Iraq, received extensive Radio 2 airplay, yet did not reach the Top 40. Appearances on the BBC Introducing... stage at Glastonbury, Wireless Festival, and T in the Park preceded the release of his second single, “Smilin’,” together with the critically acclaimed debut album My World.
