Biography

Renowned for his mastery of the pandeiro, Bubu belonged to the circle of sambistas who emerged in the 1940s and later earned the name Turma do Muro, or “the Gang of the Wall,” from their daily meetings beside the train-station wall in Oswaldo Cruz. The samba that brought him his greatest recognition, “Esta Melodia,” received its first recording in 1959 by Jamelão and later appeared in new versions by Clementina de Jesus in 1966, Cristina Buarque in 1976, and Marisa Monte in 1994. By the 1960s he had joined the group Mensageiros do Samba.
