Cervello, the Naples, Italy-based ensemble, first drew notice through guitarist Corrado Rustici, younger brother of Osanna’s highly-rated axe hero Danilo Rustici. A musical kinship with Osanna was also evident, yet Cervello’s independent artistic identity remained unmistakable. The band’s solitary album, 1973’s Melos, emerged as a vast conceptual undertaking rooted in Greek mythology and saturated with Mediterranean folk traditions. Four distinct flautists within the lineup further imparted an exceptionally distinctive character to the group’s sound. Melos ultimately proved to be Cervello’s only release; the musicians disbanded in late 1973. Early the next year Rustici joined his brother in Osanna, performing on the quartet’s fourth LP, Landscape of Life, before advancing to Nova and eventually pursuing a solo career.
