Deriving their moniker from a Gaelic term denoting an excavation into the soil—colloquially signifying disorder—the Scottish ensemble Burach emerged among numerous 1990s outfits fusing indigenous Scottish sounds with elements of rock and pop. The lineup features vocalist Ali Cherry, formerly a producer at BBC Scotland; Doug Anderson, a guitarist with classical training who handles banjo and mandolin; bassist Roy Waterston; Sandy Brechin on accordion; fiddler Greg Borland; and Eoghain Anderson providing percussion. Established toward the end of 1994, the band swiftly gained recognition through victory in the Scottish Folk Group Competition. Extensive touring followed, encompassing performances alongside the Waterboys, Big Country, and Sharon Shannon, accompanied by praise for their fusion of heritage and modern styles that incorporates jazz and blues influences. Burach's discography encompasses The Weird Set from 1995, Born Tired in 1997, and Deeper released in 2000.
