Biography
Hailing from Western Australia, Cameron Avery first fronted the Growls as lead singer and supplied drums for Abbe May before assuming the same position in the Australian psych-rock band Pond. He also served as Tame Impala’s touring bassist from 2013 onward while steadily developing material of his own. Eschewing the psychedelic textures of those projects, he instead channeled the enduring romanticism of mid-20th-century vocalists such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sarah Vaughan, and Etta James, resulting in witty, lushly arranged songs that chronicled the arc of romantic entanglement. Once Tame Impala paused following the appearance of Currents, Avery captured his debut album in Los Angeles; the finished work, Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams, appeared on Anti- in March 2017.
