Born in 1962 in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies, Meeks copied the vocal approaches of leading local performers while still at school. Convinced that success in the music business required a distinctive personal sound, he set about creating one. During the mid-1980s he auditioned for George Lemon, who issued his first single, ‘No More Secrets’, opening the door to further releases. Meeks also recorded for additional producers, notably the industrious Hugh ‘Redman’ James. By then James had become one of Jamaica’s foremost hit-makers, delivering major successes for Clement Irie and Thriller U as well as Meeks’ own 1987 tracks ‘Weh Dem Fah’, ‘Haul And Pull Up Selector’ and ‘Rude Girl Sandra’. In 1988 Meeks joined DJ Daddy Lilly on ‘Lean On Me’ and the poignant story of squandered affection, ‘Heard About My Love’. Working alone, Meeks maintained his run of popular records with the socially conscious ‘Danger’ and ‘Tuff Scout’.
