Carminho, born Carmo Rebelo de Andrade in Lisbon, performs as a Portuguese vocalist across fado and contemporary popular styles. Her mother, the established fadista Teresa Siqueira, raised her amid the genre’s traditions, and the singer has repeatedly named Lucília do Carmo, Fernando Maurício, and Amália Rodrigues among her core inspirations alongside Queen and the Beatles. Her first appearance on record came in 2003 as a featured vocalist on the collaborative release Saudades do Fado: Tertúlia de Fado Tradicional, a project guitarist Luís Penedo assembled. Recognition followed quickly: she received the Prémio Amália Revelação award in 2005 and appeared centrally in Carlos Saura’s 2007 documentary Fados.

Diogo Clemente produced her first solo album, Fado, issued in 2009; the set entered the Portuguese charts and held prominent positions throughout most of that year. European distribution arrived two years afterward, prompting the British world-music magazine Songlines to name it album of the year. Also in 2011 she joined Pablo Alborán for the duet “Perdonáme,” which reached audiences in both Spain and Portugal, and recorded “Lusa” with Pedro Luís. The 2012 album Alma paired her with three Brazilian voices—Chico Buarque on “Carolina,” Milton Nascimento on “Cais,” and Nana Caymmi on “Contrato de Separação”—and opened touring routes that extended to Brazil and Spain.

She signed with Warner in 2014 and released Canto, mixing longstanding and newly composed material. One standout track, “Chuva no Mar,” was written by Brazilian singer-songwriter Marisa Monte, who also shared the vocal on the recording. Carminho then traveled across much of Europe and performed on television in multiple countries. Next came Canta Tom Jobim, a set of bossa-nova standards performed with the composer’s own band; Jobim’s family had personally invited her to undertake the project, and she further enlisted Monte, Chico Buarque, and Maria Bethânia. Issued near the close of 2016, the album appeared on charts in Portugal, Brazil, Spain, France, and Japan, while nearly every date on the accompanying tour sold out.

Later in 2017 Monte, Carlinhos Brown, and Arnaldo Antunes asked Carminho to contribute to the second self-titled Tribalistas album, which reached stores in August.
