Caroline Rose stands out as a sharp-witted and versatile singer-songwriter whose career has unfolded through visible stylistic shifts, moving from contemporary folk into Americana with roots-rock edges before settling into an indie pop mode laced with humor. In crafting songs, Rose probes personal depths without reservation, whether conveying sincere tones on the 2014 release I Will Not Be Afraid, adopting a playfully disjointed pop sensibility for 2018's Loner, or pursuing an individualized take on modern pop with 2020's Superstar. A difficult breakup later triggered emotional distress that shaped the more shadowy and atmospheric textures of 2023's The Art of Forgetting.

Born in Long Island, New York in 1990, Rose received childhood piano instruction yet abandoned the instrument due to disinterest in assigned practice. At age 13, Rose picked up guitar and began composing privately for enjoyment. Following high school, studies in architecture gave way to a decision to pursue music as a means of earning income while seeing new places. A self-titled, self-released album appeared in 2010, after which Rose took to the road and performed as a busker whenever steady bookings proved elusive. Collaboration soon began with Vermont-based musician and songwriter Jer Coons, who handled production and engineering on 2013's America Religious, an effort that, like the prior EP, drew from folk traditions. Extensive touring preceded a partnership with the marketing and distribution company Thirty Tigers, which issued the 2014 album I Will Not Be Afraid and allowed Rose to broaden sonic scope across vintage pop, rockabilly, and roots rock elements. Satellite radio exposure followed and expanded awareness of the music.

With an expanding listenership, Rose sought material that incorporated a developing comedic perspective alongside an affinity for current pop production. After acquiring additional instruments and constructing a home studio to explore recording techniques, Rose entered the studio alongside producer Paul Butler, previously associated with Hurray for the Riff Raff and Devendra Banhart. The resulting 2018 album Loner balanced experimental impulses with accessibility while pairing serious themes with frequent levity; New West Records issued the project and funded videos for the tracks "Money" and "Soul No. 5." Strong critical response to Loner paved the way for Superstar, a loosely thematic exploration of celebrity that fully embraced contemporary pop forms and arrived via New West in March 2020. Subsequent work included remix contributions to Overcoats' 2020 album The Fight and guest vocals on Spoon's 2022 release Lucifer on the Sofa. A period of depression and doubt followed the end of a relationship, which Rose documented on 2023's The Art of Forgetting through experimental indie pop that featured a track addressed to a therapist along with recorded messages from Rose's grandmother.
