Biography
Celestial Shore, an intricate indie trio based in Brooklyn, first took shape as a recording project led by singer/guitarist Sam Owens. Owens relocated to California for an internship at Blue Microphones and there captured the tracks that formed the 2012 EP California Eden. Merging off-kilter jazz improvisations and math-inflected time signatures with classic 1960s pop touchstones such as the Zombies and Beach Boys, Owens recruited former Berklee School of Music classmates bassist Greg Albert and drummer Max Almario to solidify the group. Once back in Brooklyn and functioning as a collaborative unit—with Albert co-writing a substantial share of the songs—the band issued a 7" and a split EP before finishing their debut album, 2013's 10x. Mixed by Deerhoof's Greg Saunier and released jointly through Brad Oberhofer's Local Singles label and Portland experimental indie Hometapes, 10x displayed a progressive approach akin to fellow Brooklynites Dirty Projectors. Their second LP, the more pop-oriented Enter Ghost, appeared in November 2014.
