The U.K.'s Charlie Cunningham crafts ambient, introspective soundscapes as a thoughtfully emotive singer/songwriter whose approach merges his background as a trained Spanish classical guitarist with an affinity for spacy, experimental indie rock. After immersing himself in flamenco studies in Spain, he came back to England and earned acclaim for the inventive character of his 2017 debut Lines, followed by Permanent Way in 2019 and Frame in 2023.

Born and raised in Bedfordshire, Cunningham began playing guitar during his teenage years and performed with multiple hardcore and experimental indie rock groups shaped by the sounds of Sigur Rós and Mogwai. Once he completed his college music degree, he took a job waiting tables while grappling with doubts about his talent and commitment to music. During that time he encountered classical Spanish guitar repertoire and felt immediately compelled by its expansive dynamic and emotional possibilities. He sold his Fender Telecaster to purchase a train ticket to Seville and enrolled at a flamenco school. Although he had intended to remain only two months, he ended up living in Spain for two years, dividing his days among lessons, practice sessions, and live performances.

Cunningham later settled in Oxford upon returning to England, where he soon secured regular appearances at neighborhood bars. While continuing to perform traditional Spanish pieces, he also started composing his own spectral indie folk material. Performing primarily alone and supporting his vocals on acoustic classical guitar with generous echo, he released his debut EP Outside Things in 2014. Additional EPs such as Breather in 2015 and Heights in 2016 reinforced the spare, introspective character of his work. Radio 1 airplay for these recordings helped open the door to his first full-length album, Lines, in 2017. In 2019 he delivered his second album Permanent Way, featuring the track "Don't Go Far," and supported the release with numerous concerts across North America and Europe. A subsequent run of dates in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico backing Yann Tiersen took place in mid-2022, followed later that year by a brief series of European headline shows. Frame, issued in 2023, extended his body of meticulous songwriting and introduced the singles "Downpour" and "So It Seems."
