The artist Che Fu, whose name is pronounced “shay foo,” first rose to attention as a member of the funk-rock outfit Supergroove. After leaving that group in 1996, he established himself as New Zealand’s foremost voice in soul and hip-hop, reaching the summit of the charts with a featured appearance on DLT’s “Chains.” Through both his 1998 debut album 2b S.Pacific and the 2001 release Navigator, which earned widespread critical praise, he has continued to examine issues of direct relevance to Maori communities.
