Stan Walker, a New Zealand-raised pop vocalist steeped in R&B sensibilities and of Maori lineage, first captured widespread attention by claiming victory on the 2009 season of Australian Idol. Shortly afterward his debut single, “Black Box,” climbed to the summit of the New Zealand singles chart and reached number two in Australia. Born in Melbourne on October 23, 1990, he had crossed the Tasman to grow up in New Zealand before returning to audition for the program’s seventh season, where he opened with a performance of John Legend’s “Ordinary People.”

As he progressed through successive elimination rounds, Walker drew consistent acclaim from the judging panel, among them guests Joel Madden, Benji Madden, Michael Bublé, and Pete Wentz, for his assured R&B phrasing. On November 22, 2009, he edged out runner-up Hayley Warner to win the competition and introduced “Black Box” to the public for the first time. The track, co-written by English songwriter Wayne Hector—known for his Westlife collaborations—alongside Danish hitmakers Jonas Jeberg and Cutfather, was rushed out as a digital download and immediately dominated the charts.

His full-length debut, Introducing... Stan Walker (2009), was reportedly completed in only two days and drew almost entirely from material he had performed on the show; just two cuts were original. Issued by Sony Music amid the holiday retail rush, the album entered the Top Five in both New Zealand and Australia.
