Biography
Australia-born Conrad Sewell channels a soulful voice into dance-leaning R&B and pop that recalls the style of Sam Smith, the Weeknd, and Michael Jackson. He first reached the top of the Australian charts in 2015 with “Start Again,” taken from his Top 10 EP All I Know, and has since lent his vocals to electronic dance tracks by Kygo, CID, Avicii, and Armin van Buuren.
Born in Brisbane in 1988, Sewell was raised in a household filled with music and began singing at an early age. By the time he turned eight he was already laying down demo recordings in hopes of building a performing career. At sixteen he tried out for the second season of Australian Idol in 2004, yet he did not advance; instead he spent his remaining high-school years performing with local groups and formed the rock band Sons of Midnight, which landed a deal with Universal Germany. The group scored a European hit with “The Fire,” after which Sewell left the lineup and moved to Los Angeles to launch a solo project.
While based in California he added another European success with “Firestone,” his collaboration with Norway’s DJ Kygo. Capitalizing on that momentum, he prepared original material and delivered his first two singles, “Hold Me Up” and “Start Again,” through 300 Entertainment in 2015. The former reached the Top 40 while the latter claimed the number-one spot; both appeared on his debut EP All I Know, released that November and debuting at number nine on the Australian charts. The following year he joined forces with Avicii on “Taste the Feeling,” carrying his chart activity into Europe. Further partnerships arrived with CID on “Secrets” and with Armin van Buuren on “Sex, Love & Water” through 2018. That same year Sewell issued the EP Ghosts & Heartaches, featuring the double-sided single “Come Clean” b/w “Healing Hands.” Both songs later appeared on his first full-length album, LIFE, which topped the Australian charts upon its arrival in 2019.
