Biography
Chynna Phillips launched her vocal career in 1989 upon forming the trio Wilson Phillips alongside Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson, daughters of Beach Boy Brian Wilson. Prior to this musical venture, she had already entered show business through modeling and acting roles.
Born in Los Angeles, California, to John and Michelle Phillips of the 1960s folk-rock band the Mamas and the Papas, Phillips spent her early years surrounded by film luminaries including Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson. She and the Wilson sisters had been acquainted since infancy, and together they formed a childhood backyard group known as the Satellites. Following high school, Phillips pursued modeling and acting, securing a part in John Hughes’ Some Kind of Wonderful and a lead role in The Invisible Kid. Owen Elliot, daughter of former Mama Cass Elliot, proposed gathering children of 1960s musicians for a charity album; the idea met with lukewarm interest, prompting Phillips to team with the Wilsons in 1986 and establish Wilson Phillips. Owen Elliot was also invited but chose instead to focus on solo work.
The group composed and tracked several tracks, among them “Impulsive” and “Hold On,” before securing a recording deal. In 1990, with producer Richard Perry’s assistance, they issued their debut album Wilson Phillips, which included the hit singles “Hold On,” “Release Me,” and “You’re in Love.” The project achieved sales exceeding ten million copies globally and took the members on international tours, including stops in Japan. Upon their return, they completed Shadows and Light in three months, though the follow-up failed to match the commercial impact of its predecessor.
After producing eight music videos and two albums, Phillips turned toward a solo path and delivered her debut album, Naked and Sacred, in 1995. That September she wed film actor William Baldwin.
