Andy Clark, whose instrumental contributions spanned vocals, keyboards, percussion, flute, saxophone and rhythm guitar, first collaborated with Mick Hutchinson—whose own multi-instrumental role covered lead guitar, percussion, piano and bass—inside Vamp, the fleeting British quartet assembled in the late 1960s by Viv Prince, the former Pretty Things drummer. After issuing a lone single, the quartet disbanded, yet Clark and Hutchinson carried on and committed to tape the striking album A=MH2. The largely spontaneous recording quickly found a wide audience, owing much of its appeal to Hutchinson’s commanding guitar performances. Having previously played in Sam Gopal’s Dream, Hutchinson infused the project with that ensemble’s neo-Eastern sensibility, an element showcased to striking effect on the thirteen-minute piece “Improvisation On An Indian Scale.” Buoyed by this reception, the duo expanded into a permanent quartet by recruiting Stephen Amazing on bass and Del Coverly on drums. Later recordings failed to match the originality of the debut, and the partnership dissolved after the release of its third album, Gestalt.
