Biography
Coco & Clair Clair formed as a lo-fi pop-rap duo after Taylor Nave and Claire Toothill first connected online. Their tracks, marked by inward, low-key atmospheres suited to endless scrolls of brief and extended clips across digital platforms, also carry a distinctive stamp rooted in Atlanta, one of the South’s central hip-hop centers. The pair, who spent their teenage years in separate suburbs of that city, turned their virtual acquaintance into an in-person meeting there. Nave’s boyfriend at the time, a hip-hop producer, supplied leftover beats for what began as casual experiments and resulted in the duo’s debut EP, Posh, issued in 2017. Another track from that year, “Pretty,” emerged as a major streaming success, layering trap rhythms and rippling synth lines beneath the alternating cadence of Nave’s dry, knowing verses and Toothill’s chorus vocals.
When Toothill relocated to New York temporarily, the project shifted to long-distance collaboration, yet the two kept working. Electronic artist Deaton Chris Anthony included them on “RACECAR” with rising Atlanta rapper Clairo. Additional singles and EPs followed, among them “Crushcrushcrush,” “Pop Star,” and Treat Like Gold, whose highlight “Wishy Washy” sat alongside Kreayshawn’s guest verse on “TLG.” Once Nave finished college, Toothill returned to Atlanta, allowing the duo to finish their first full-length effort. Sexy arrived in 2023, spotlighting the earlier cuts “Pop Star,” “U + Me,” and “Cherub” alongside fresh material such as “Love Me” and “The Hills,” the latter reworked by George Daniel of The 1975 for a deluxe version. After issuing a rendition of Wham!’s “Last Christmas” later that year, Coco & Clair Clair delivered their next album, Girl, the following summer.
