Biography
After stepping away from Phantom Planet, Jason Schwartzman waited three years before unveiling his solo venture Coconut Records and thereby reconnecting with Los Angeles audiences drawn to pop. Schwartzman had founded Phantom Planet in 1994, holding the drum chair for nearly a decade while simultaneously building an acting résumé that included appearances in Rushmore, CQ, Slackers, S1m0ne, and Spun. Although his exit from the band in 2003 brought a wave of additional acting offers, Schwartzman still could not set music aside. Enlisting Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger as producer, he traveled to Malibu in the summer of 2006 to capture Nighttiming, performing the bulk of the vocals and instruments himself yet inviting cameo contributions from fellow actors and musicians that included Kirsten Dunst, Zooey Deschanel, Brandon Boyd, Ben Kenney, and brother Robert Carmine. Young Baby Records released the album early the following year; the first copies featured Polaroid photographs taken by Schwartzman.
