Biography
Cybotron emerged as a groundbreaking electro outfit headed by Juan Atkins, the Detroit techno trailblazer. The partnership began in 1980 when Atkins and Rick Davis formed the duo, whose electronic machine funk absorbed inspiration from Kraftwerk, George Clinton, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and new wave while also drawing on futurist writings such as Alvin Toffler's Future Shock and The Third Wave. A pair of self-released singles came before Fantasy signed the act, which then issued the widely sampled and influential classic "Clear" together with the album Enter in 1983. Atkins exited the group over creative disagreements and started Model 500 in 1985. Davis continued Cybotron with further output through the 1990s. Decades afterward Atkins assembled a renewed lineup that delivered Maintain the Golden Ratio in 2023.
Juan Atkins first encountered Vietnam War veteran Rick Davis, also called 3070, in a music theory class at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor. The pair launched Cybotron and debuted with the dystopian electro-funk track "Alleys of Your Mind," backed by the luminous uptempo instrumental "Cosmic Raindance." Deep Space Records, Atkins' own label, put the record out in 1981 at roughly the same moment A Number of Names released the Italo-disco-flavored "Sharevari," another release frequently named among the earliest Detroit techno singles. Cybotron's next single, "Cosmic Cars," appeared in 1982 and Fantasy Records licensed it for wider distribution. Its B-side "The Line" was co-written by guitarist Jon-5, the project's third member. The debut album Enter arrived in 1983 and merged electro, funk, and new wave strands. The energetic, forward-looking "Clear" quickly turned into a club staple, while cuts such as "Industrial Lies" and "Enter" emphasized technological unease.
After two additional singles with the group—"Techno City" in 1984 and "R-9" in 1985—Atkins lost interest in Cybotron's growing rock orientation and departed. He established Metroplex Records with the first Model 500 releases, "No UFO's" and "Night Drive (Thru-Babylon)," and played a central part in shaping the Detroit techno scene. Davis nevertheless carried on with Cybotron, releasing the single "Eden" in 1986. Several years later the reclusive musician unveiled the second Cybotron album, 1993's Empathy, an experimental work that folded in ambient and hip-hop elements. The ambitious, fantasy-themed Cyber Ghetto followed in 1995.
Cybotron's 1980s recordings were gathered on Interface: The Roots of Techno (1994) and Motor City Machine Music: An Exploration of Cybotron (2005), while the songs received occasional remixes and reissues. "Clear" has kept its standing as an enduring classic and has been sampled extensively, most prominently by Missy Elliott on her 2005 hit "Lose Control." Atkins assembled an updated Cybotron lineup and intended to perform at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (distinct from the city's annual Movement festival) in 2014, yet the event was canceled. The group gave its first live performance at London's Barbican Centre in April 2019 and also appeared at the European festivals Dekmantel and Primavera Sound. Made up of Atkins, Tameko Williams (D.I.E. [Detroit in Effect]), and Laurens von Oswald (nephew of Basic Channel co-founder Moritz von Oswald), Cybotron performed at a 2020 Louis Vuitton runway show in Paris directed by Virgil Abloh. The act made its first Detroit live appearance at the 2023 Movement festival. A limited white label 12", the vocal-driven electro track "Maintain," was sold at the Metroplex tent. Tresor later released Maintain the Golden Ratio, a two-song single that also included "The Golden Ratio (Version)."
