Dadi served as the steady bassist for A Cor do Som, Os Novos Baianos, Barão Vermelho, Caetano Veloso, and Marisa Monte while also appearing as a session player on recordings by Mick Jagger, Elba Ramalho, Chico Buarque, Moraes Moreira, MPB-4, and numerous additional artists. Caetano Veloso dedicated the suggestive “Leãozinho” to him. A self-taught musician, Dadi picked up guitar and electric bass at age thirteen; soon afterward he and some friends started the amateur group the Goofies, which performed at neighborhood parties. He turned professional at eighteen, joining Os Novos Baianos as bassist from 1970 to 1975. That same year he backed Mick Jagger on the PolyGram recording of “Scarlet.” Between 1975 and 1978 he played in Jorge Ben’s Banda do Zé Pretinho as well as Admiral Jorge V. In 1977 Dadi, his brother Mú Carvalho, Armandinho, and Gustavo launched the band A Cor do Som, which split in 1987 and reunited in 1994. He stepped in for Dé with Barão Vermelho in 1990 and remained until 1992, the year he received an invitation to join Caetano Veloso’s band. Dadi took part in the Circuladô show that produced the live album Circuladô Ao Vivo and led to an international tour. After 1996 he became a permanent member of Marisa Monte’s group, contributing to Barulhinho Bom (1996) and Memórias, Crônicas e Declarações de Amor (2000).
