Biography
Emerging from Reykjavík in 2009, the Icelandic folk-pop duo Pascal Pinon derived its name from an early twentieth-century circus performer billed as "the Two-Headed Mexican." Twin sisters Jófrídur Ákadöttir and Ásthildur Ákadöttir anchor the project, which initially benefited from the contributions of bandmates Halla and Kristín. Their output merges delicate, offbeat indie folk touches that recall the work of Tegan and Sara as well as Seabear.
The self-titled debut, performed in both English and Icelandic and tracked when the sisters were only fourteen, appeared in December 2010. For the next release the pair operated strictly as a duo alongside producer Alex Sommers (Sigur Rós, Jónsi), widening their sonic range to preserve the original charm while achieving greater accessibility. Morr Music issued the resulting album, Twosomeness, in early 2013.
After an interval spent apart—Ásthildur studying music in Amsterdam while Jófrídur toured with her other group, Samaris—the sisters regrouped to complete Sundur in 2016. That album introduced a darker atmosphere and heightened experimental detail. Its title, translating as "apart," stems from the Icelandic phrase "sundur og saman," rendered in English as "apart and together."
