Dakim Saadiq, who puts out music under his given name as well as the shortened alias Dak, works as an experimental beatmaker with roots in Detroit and later ties to Los Angeles. Known for keeping a low profile, he became one of Matthewdavid’s earliest signings to Leaving Records, where his jagged, low-fidelity sample work drew acclaim from established figures in the city’s beat community, among them Flying Lotus and Ras G. His debut came in 2009 with the Leaving Records issue Standthis. After issuing several CD-Rs on his own, he put out a pair of 7-inch EPs titled Ntoo and Damage in 2011, along with 34 Fragments—an album assembled from captured fragments of daily life—that appeared via the Italian imprint Senuone Editions in 2012. Additional cassettes followed on Leaving Records, among them Youstandit/Leftrecord, Ddust Regos under the Dak moniker, and Soap. In 2016 the label issued Reishi, a full-length LP credited to Dakim’s Saafron project.
