Biography
Darien Brockington possesses a voice that is both warm and pleading, one that threads through numerous significant recordings tied to the Justus League and Foreign Exchange circles while also anchoring a modest but devoted catalog of solo work favored by fans of progressive adult R&B. Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Durham, North Carolina, he first sang publicly in church as a small child and delivered his initial solo performance at age six. While enrolled at North Carolina Central University in 2000, he encountered Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh of Little Brother; several years afterward, a chance meeting with Big Pooh during his time as a bank teller led him into the broader Justus League collective.
Brockington surfaced on multiple 2004 releases, supplying hooks for Little Brother’s “On and On” and Pete Rock’s Little Brother-assisted “Give It to Ya,” and serving as a central presence on the Foreign Exchange’s debut Connected, where he fronted “Come Around” (which he co-wrote) and “Call.” The following year brought additional appearances on Big Pooh’s “On My Mind” and Symbolyc One and Illmind’s “Night Like This” (again featuring Pooh), plus extensive contributions to Little Brother’s major-label debut The Minstrel Show. That same year also marked his solo introduction via the Hall of Justus EP The Feeling, which carried executive production and writing from Phonte along with beats from Nicolay, Symbolyc One, Vitamin D, and Black Spade.
The Feeling set the stage for Brockington’s first full-length, Somebody to Love, issued by ABB Soul in 2006 and featuring production input from E. Jones, S1 (aka Symbolyc One), Khrysis, and 9th Wonder among others. He simultaneously lent his voice to Strange Fruit Project’s The Healing, Nicolay’s Here, and Oddisee’s Foot in the Door. Subsequent years found him on 4hero’s “Give In” (also featuring Phonte), Little Brother’s “Two Step Blues,” and the Foreign Exchange’s Leave It All Behind, most prominently on the album’s second single “Take Off the Blues.” Before the decade closed he issued the mixtape The Cold Case Files, recorded with E. Jones, Khrysis, Sheldon Williams, and Fatin and promoted by the ballad “Rain.”
A fifteen-year interval preceded his next solo project. Early in the 2010s he continued supporting work with the Foreign Exchange, Little Brother, Zo!, Yahzarah, and Rhymefest; his duet with Yahzarah on “All My Days,” from The Ballad of Purple Saint James, ranks among his most streamed recordings. Appearances grew infrequent through the rest of the decade, though he appeared on Little Brother’s 2019 album May the Lord Watch. Between 2021 and 2022 he featured on Zo! & Tall Black Guy’s “Hold My Hand,” BeMyFiasco’s “Thinkin Bout It,” Big Pooh and Young RJ’s “Smile,” and Phife Dawg’s “2 Live Forever.” In 2024 he contributed to Sy Smith’s Until We Meet Again and released the Foreign Exchange Music EP When Love Grows, produced chiefly by Zo! & Tall Black Guy.
