Biography
Born in Harlem, vocalist D'Atra Hicks sang regularly in her grandfather’s church choir throughout her childhood. During their teenage years, she and her sister Miriam launched the duo Hicks Sisters, which in time yielded a demo recording. The producers of the play Mama I Want to Sing responded by offering Hicks the lead part in the show that would become the most successful off-Broadway Black musical in theater history. She secured a solo contract with Capitol in 1989; her self-titled debut album D'Atra Hicks carried production credits for Narada Michael Walden and Nick Martinelli.
